Chapter 8

Matt sat up slowly. His chest felt tight and his ribs hurt like hell, but he knew enough to realize there was nothing broken, just badly bruised. His ankle was a different story. The pain from the twisted joint was a new constant, and any attempt to move sent waves of pain shooting into his brain like flares.

“Is it broken?” Levi asked.

“I don’t think so.” Matt stared at his foot, as if he could somehow will it to get better. “How’s your head?”

“Still attached.” The conversation was stilted, and the silence between them was as awkward as a badly planned first date.

“So, he’s finally gone,” Matt spoke before he knew it. Even after everything, he was alarmed at not only how cold the words were when he uttered them, but how unmoved he was by the fact.

“Yep.” Levi had a distant look to his eyes, and Matt didn’t think it was only because of the head injury.

“I’m sorry, brother,” Matt began.

“Don’t be. He was an asshole, and he deserved what he got.” Levi spoke the words, but even Matt knew that the emotion behind them told a different story.

“I don’t mean that. I mean for leaving you. I never even … never even thought he would start on you,” Matt stammered, realizing how he had failed as a brother.

“That was always the problem. It was never just about you, Matt. You never understood the things I put up with just so he would leave you alone. It wasn’t when you left, it was always.” Levi lowered his head and began to sob. Decades of pent up frustration bubbled to the surface.

“Levi …” Matt started, but found he did not have the words to go on.

“You have no idea what that man was really capable of. The things he did to me, growing up and as a man. Sure, maybe he stopped crawling into bed with me, but he ruined my adult life and my career.” Levi’s voice rose in time with his anger. His sobs gave way to rage.

“I’m so sorry. I could have helped, Mum and I, we could have helped,” Matt began, but Levi looked at him with a flash of hatred, and it made his tongue fall still.

“Don’t you dare be sorry. You have no right to be sorry for me. I’m glad that fucker is dead. To be honest, I was planning on killing him myself. I would have done so already if it wasn’t for …wasn’t for …” Levi stopped, catching his words. He stammered and spat a series of nonsensical sounds, clearly having said too much.

“What is it?” Matt pushed.

“Sorry to break up this little party, but we need to move. The locals seem to be gathering and I don’t really want to get in their way,” Finn spoke, the edge had fallen from his voice, softened in light of the harsh reality of their existence.

Matt got to his feet and looked around. The valley was enormous, showing the full scope and size of the world they were in.
